With the exception of its outstanding fuel economy, the NX isn’t head and shoulders above any models in this highly competitive segment in any one category but offers enough features and engine choices that it’s definitely a contender, especially in its hybrid forms. It impressively earns the highest Top Safety Pick+ award from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), and the hybrid battery on the 350h and 450h+ is covered for 10 years or 150,000 miles. The exterior styling can be polarizing, especially with the oversized “spindle” grille, but the interior design is handsome and the materials are top-notch. The 2022 redesign added a new infotainment system with subscription-based services, including a virtual assistant and cloud navigation. But it’s a $14,850 premium over the hybrid. When that depletes, it reverts to conventional hybrid operation, so there’s no range anxiety as long as there’s gas in the tank. The 450h+ plug-in hybrid (PHEV) uses the same hybrid system but can travel up to 37 miles fuel-free on its battery alone. It’s growly on hard acceleration, and that doesn’t feel quite up to its premium label, but it’s fine in everyday driving and costs less than the non-hybrid NX 350. The sweet spot is the 350h hybrid, which uses the same 2.5-liter engine but paired with an electric motor. That standard 2.5-liter engine feels underpowered, and the 275-horsepower turbocharged 2.4-liter in the NX 350 is a better choice for performance. The NX shares its platform with the Toyota RAV4, as well as its base and hybrid engines. The Lexus NX features the brand’s signature “spindle” grille, which comes with its fair share of fans and critics. BMW and Audi offer sportier driving experiences, as does the Genesis GV70. The NX 350’s turbocharged four-cylinder engine is more powerful than comparable engines in the Acura, Cadillac or Lincoln, and with slightly better fuel economy, but it has less legroom, especially in the rear seat, and the RDX and Corsair have more cargo space. There’s also models such as the Audi Q3, BMW X3, Infiniti QX50 and Volvo XC40. The NX faces a number of premium compact competitors, including the Acura RDX, Cadillac XT4 and Lincoln Corsair, which also offers a PHEV version. Trim levels include the Premium and Luxury and the 350 F SPORT Handling AWD and 450h+ F SPORT AWD. New for 2023, phone connectivity is now wireless, and an F Sport Handling package that adds a sport-style suspension is available for the 350 and 450h+. The NX 350h is a hybrid at $41,955, while the NX 450h+ plug-in hybrid (PHEV) is $57,705. All other versions are AWD-only, with the NX 350 using a 2.4-litre turbocharged engine and starting at $43,695. The NX’s base version is the 250, with 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine and starting at $39,755 in front-wheel drive and $40,205 in all-wheel drive (AWD), including a destination fee of $1,150. But while it’s comfortable and quiet, some features you might expect in a premium model, such as a hands-free liftgate, rain-sensing wipers or the new larger multimedia touchscreen, are bundled into pricey option packages. It provides considerable choice for buyers with base and turbocharged engines, a hybrid and a plug-in hybrid. Completely redesigned for 2022, the Lexus NX luxury compact SUV moves into 2023 with relatively few changes.
